the celebration of the 100th birthday
The occasion of Professor Vasile NILCA turning 100 and the chance to be in the company of a symbolic figure of Transylvanian horticulture offered the teaching staff, students, and the entire personnel of the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Cluj-Napoca a unique opportunity to celebrate the event.
On this special occasion, the university staff, students, and guests attended the ceremony held in the Aula Magna “Mihai Șerban” of USAMV Cluj-Napoca, following the programme:

Vasile Nilca, the 100-year-old professor, celebrated at USAMV

A personality of Transylvanian horticulture, Vasile Nilca developed the first course in ‘Vegetable Growing’ and participated in the construction of the university’s first experimental greenhouse, as well as the arrangement of spaces dedicated to teaching and research activities.
Nilca was the first holder of the chair in vegetable growing and floriculture, a position from which he initiated and organized the functioning of this discipline during the period 1949–1957. In 1972 he obtained the scientific title of doctor with the thesis “Studies on the Zoning of Vegetable Production in the Transylvanian Plateau”.
On the occasion of his centenary, Nilca was awarded the title of laureate professor for his entire career and contribution to the development of higher horticultural education in Transylvania, along with a medal. Mayor Emil Boc presented him with an anniversary diploma and a medal.
The event was attended by the Rector of USAMV, Doru Pamfil, the Dean of the Faculty of Horticulture, Radu Sestraș, Liviu Mărghitaș – President of the USAMV Senate, Gheorghe Glăman – President of the Romanian Society of Horticulturists and of the Horticulture Section of the Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, Alexandru Salontai – Rector of USAMV (1984–1990), and Leon Sorin Muntean – Rector of USAMV (1990–2000).
“This is a unique moment in my life. During the speeches, a film played in my mind that says: “The years have passed like long clouds over the plains“. Indeed, many years have passed since, in this hall, in 1939, the erudite Professor Grăniceanu declared me a graduate of the Academy of Higher Agricultural Studies in Cluj – as this institution was called at the time – and conferred upon me the degree of agricultural engineer. My greatest satisfactions I have obtained at the lectern, in this atmosphere of high academic standards, in which I have managed, to the extent of my abilities, to be a teacher who gives counsel, to be in the service of those who expected knowledge from me… My wish is that you reach my age and then, you will see, there is more to come!“, the professor being honored said…
