Prof Dr. Jaime Prohens is Engineer in Agronomy (1993) and Doctor Engineer in Agronomy (1997). He is Full Professor of Genetics and Plant Breeding at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, where he has been teaching post since been teaching since 1997.

His main research lines have dealt with vegetable crops breeding, where he has used the integration of conventional methods and new biotechnologies with the final aim of developing new vegetable cultivars for the development of the horticultural sector. He has collaborated with many research groups and his activity has had an important international projection. At the same time, he developed an important task for the promotion and stimulation of the national and international research activity in Plant Breeding and Horticulture by presiding over the European Association Research on Plant Breeding (EUCARPIA) and also the Spanish Society for Horticultural Science. He has also devoted time to the administration at the University level, by being director of the Department of Biotechnology and the Institute for Conservation and Improvement of Agrodiversity (COMAV), two of the most relevant research structures of the Polytechnical University of Valencia.

Doctor honoris causa

Jaime Prohens, investigador de la UPV, es doctor honoris causa por la Universidad de Ciencias Agrícolas y Medicina Veterinaria de Cluj-Napoca

Jaime Prohens Tomás (1969) es catedrático de Universidad; profesor del Departamento de Biotecnología de la Universitat Politècnica de València, adscrito a la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Agronómica y del Medio Natural (ETSIAMN), y director del Instituto Universitario de Conservación y Mejora de la Agrodiversidad Valenciana.

Recientemente, ha sido investido doctor honoris causa por la Universidad de Ciencias Agrícolas y Medicina Veterinaria de Cluj-Napoca (USAMV-CN, Rumanía) por sus contribuciones a la docencia e investigación en el ámbito de la mejora genética vegetal. La USAMV-CN es una de las universidades más prestigiosas de Rumanía, ya que se sitúa en quinta posición (entre las más de 50 universidades públicas de Rumanía) en el ranking de excelencia de la ARACIS (la equivalente rumana de la ANECA). Para Prohens esta distinción supone “una alegría personal y una gran satisfacción, por poder aportar otro grano de arena al prestigio y el renombre de la UPV fuera de nuestras fronteras”.

Jaime Prohens obtuvo el título de ingeniero agrónomo en 1993 y el de doctor en 1997, ambos por la Universitat Politècnica de València. Su tesis doctoral recibió el premio Jóvenes Investigadores de la Sociedad Española de Ciencias Hortícolas (SECH). Desde 1997 es profesor en la UPV y ha recibido el Premio a la Excelencia Docente del Consejo Social de la UPV y la Generalitat Valenciana en su primera edición (2009).

Su investigación se desarrolla en el campo de la biotecnología y la mejora genética vegetal, en particular de hortalizas, en donde ha realizado considerables contribuciones científicas en distintos ámbitos, incluyendo, entre otros, la conservación y utilización en la mejora de recursos genéticos, la mejora de la calidad, la mejora de la resistencia a estreses, el cultivo in vitro, la selección asistida por marcadores moleculares y la genómica aplicada a la mejora.

Por otra parte, Prohens es editor principal de la serie “Handbook of Plant Breeding” de la editorial Springer y es editor asociado de varias revistas científicas de alto impacto. Asimismo, fue presidente de 2004 a 2008 de la European Association for Research on Plant Breeding (EUCARPIA) y, en la actualidad, es presidente de la Sociedad Española de Ciencias Hortícolas (SECH).

Celebrating 35 years of excellence in education and research in the field of horticulture within the Faculty of Horticulture at the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca was a moment of great joy for the academic staff, the graduates and the students of the faculty.
